How referral programs work when you are the new user

If you have never used a referral code, the whole thing can feel like it has a catch. It does not — but it does have a sequence, and doing the steps out of order is how most people lose the bonus.

This is the walkthrough from the new user's side, from before you download the app to the day the reward lands.

Step 1: get the code before you create the account

This is the whole game. Referral codes are bound at account creation, and there is no retroactive fix in most programs. Find the code first, then sign up.

If you have already created an account, check the rewards tab anyway — a minority of apps allow a code within the first day or two.

Step 2: read the offer, not the headline

The brand's referral page states the bonus for the new user, the qualifying action, the deadline, and the eligible countries. Two minutes there tells you whether the offer is worth the effort.

• Bonus — What you receive, and whether it is cash, credit or product.
• Action — What you must do — verify, spend, deposit, or stay subscribed.
• Deadline — Most windows are 14 to 30 days from signup.
• Region — Whether the offer exists in your country at all.

Step 3: complete the qualifying action promptly

Do not sign up now and plan to make the first purchase next month. The deadline is the most common failure point after attribution. If the requirement is a first order, place a small one immediately.

Step 4: watch the pending state

Nearly every app shows a pending reward before it clears. Seeing that status is your confirmation that attribution worked. If nothing appears within a few days of qualifying, contact support early rather than waiting out the full window.

Step 5: become a referrer yourself

Once your bonus clears, you have your own code in the same rewards screen. Posting it where people search for that brand — rather than pushing it at friends — is how the second half of this works.
